Mac sales spike in April

May 20th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

It may be the cruelest month, but for Mac buyers apparently April was hotter than the middle of summer, AppleInsider reports. An analyst note from Lehman Brothers quotes NPD data with a 50% year-over-year boost in Mac sales last month, combined with a 15% bump in iPod unit sales for the same period versus the year-ago data.

Granted, in April of last year we didn’t yet have Leopard to entice buyers, and the product line was beginning to seem a trifle long in the tooth, but what’s impressive to me about this sales surge is that it smiles in the face of economic uncertainty, increased cost of living and general fiscal heebie-jeebies. Do Macs make people feel more secure and happier, or do they just seem like a more stable and dependable choice versus buying a new PC and having to roll forward to Vista?

At the Reuters Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in Paris today, T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan said he expected to continue being the exclusive iPhone provider in Germany, citing the company’s strong relationship with Apple.

He also noted that “if and when” there is a 3G iPhone, T-Mobile anticipates selling it exclusively in Germany as well. Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile’s parent company) will sell the iPhone in Austria, but Orange will carry the iPhone in Germany’s southern neighbor as well.

Apple posts long version of "Sad Song" ad

May 20th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

Because Apple thought that you just couldn’t get enough of that “Vista blues” song that was in the latest Get a Mac ad, they posted an extended version of it that runs 1 minute, 34 seconds. PC just keeps singing, despite Mac’s look of amazement that PC could sing that long. At the end, PC finishes the song by singing “… there’s nothing left to do, except control. alt. delete.”

You can watch this and other Get a Mac ads by visiting the Apple Get a Mac site.

Thanks to Steve and Ton for the tip!

Apple posts job listings for Munich Apple Store

May 10th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

In June of last year, we wrote about the Apple Store that has been planned for Munich, Germany. At the time, rumors identified an opening date of “…the 2nd half of 2008.”

Today, Apple has posted several retail job openings for Munich, from concierge up to store manager; eleven in total. If they’ve begun looking for employees, the store must be near completion.

The iPhone was made available to Germans in November of last year, and a June store opening would coincide nicely with the rumored 3G iPhone release.

If you’re a TUAW reader in Munich, head down to 1 Rosenstrasse (formerly home to Sport Schuster sporting goods) and let us know what you find! The time has almost come for Germany’s first Apple Store!

Thanks, Chris!

The OS X desktop as music video

May 10th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

A digital filmmaker named Dennis Liu has made an amazing video for The Bird And The Bee’s lovely song “Again & Again”. The set? His Mac desktop. You sort of have to see it for yourself to understand; luckily, Dennis has dropped it on YouTube so that the world can see it in low-res glory:

Innovative, and definitely cool. It doesn’t seem to be an “official” video for the song…but if it isn’t, it oughtta be. (Hey, Bird! Bee! Y’all paying attention?)

Thanks, Ted Roddy!

Mac 101: External HDs

May 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

More Mac 101, our series of basic tips for new and returning Mac users. Since most Mac models don’t offer extra drive bays, external hard disks are the way to go for adding vast storage capacity to your computer. External HDs are great for storing large projects, moving huge amounts of data from place to place, or backing up via Time Machine.

Hard disks are a commodity product nowadays: the market is flooded with a cornucopia of options, most of them cheap and easy to install. So which is right for you?

The trick is this: find out who makes the actual hard drive inside the external enclosure (that is, inside the nicely-designed plastic or metal box that sits on or under your desk).

It’s what’s inside that counts, and we’ll explore after the jump.

Indigo 3.0, increased geekiness for your home

Once upon a time, my house was alive. It would wake me up with an hour-long procedure of ramping up the lights and using a zen chime at increasing intervals. Once the hour was up, it would check to see if I had opened the bathroom door yet and, if not, scold me with increasing levels of profanity for sleeping too late. It would read me the weather and top headlines while I brushed my teeth. It would turn lights on and off as I moved through the house. It had everything but an omnipresent, glowing red eye.

And it was grand, until a series of events (that I can now look back at and laugh) resulted in the PC it was all running on devouring itself and the connected backup drive. Now, in addition to an offsite backup system, I’ve got a lot of switches, sensors, motion detectors and the like and haven’t had the heart to build the system again. But here I am with an extra Mini, and Perceptive Automation just released a new version of Indigo. My inner geek is just itching to restore my home to its former blinking, talking, almost-sentient glory.

LogicielMac Update keeps your applications current

May 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

Filed under:

Software Update is pretty awesome for Apple software, but have you ever wanted that functionality for the rest of your apps? 19-year-old developer Louka Desroziers created a nifty little menubar app called LogicielMac Update that checks for updates to the applications installed on your machine. There are options to automatically download the updates and install them. You can also create an ignored list of apps that you don’t want to update.

The app gets most of its information from LogicielMac (logiciel meaning “software,” and Mac meaning “best platform ever”), a Francophonic site similar to VersionTracker and MacUpdate. But fear not, English speakers, as LogicielMac Update is localized for English.

The only improvement I could see is showing the difference between free updates and upgrades (that you must pay for in order to get). I always hate it when I download an upgrade without thinking, wiping out my perfectly good old copy that I paid for.

LogicielMac Update is donationware, so show Louka some love if you like what he’s made. The download is 1.2MB, and Leopard is recommended. If you’ve felt unsatisfied by other update managers, check it out.

Thanks, Michael G!

Hot for Hindi? Up for learning Uyghur? Wild about Welsh? LifeClever tipped us off to the fact that there are 926 free language training podcasts currently available in the iTunes Store. A quick glance at the available podcasts shows that you can learn 39 languages from Arabic to Yiddish with the help of your iPod or iPhone.

To find this treasure trove of linguistic goodness, launch iTunes, pop into the iTunes Store, click on the Browse link, and navigate to Podcasts > Education > Language Courses.

What am I going to learn on my summer vacation? I’m waffling between Sexy Spanish and Latinum. This is a great way to get your kids to learn a language and keep them occupied during that long, hot road trip to Wally World this summer.

Thanks, Tipster Chanpory!

EETimes: Apple was an investor of PA Semi before acquisition

May 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in tuaw.com

It was just a couple weeks ago that Apple bought PA Semi, a custom PowerPC chip design firm. But now that a few details about the acquisition are leaking out, a new light has begun to shine on this subject. According to an EETimes post, Apple considered buying PA Semi back in 2005, prior to the Intel switch. Oh yeah, and one minor detail … Apple has been an investor in the company since that time. When Apple started using Intel chips, that move sent a death threat to PA Semi.

Per the EETimes story, Apple came along to purchase a new chip from PA Semi. PA Semi didn’t have enough investor funding to undertake a new project. So, what does Apple do? They pay off the investors and buy the whole company. Apple bought PA Semi for 8 million — no pocket change, that’s for sure. How important could this chip be for Apple to pay that much money? Well it might just be for a new tablet Mac (remember, you heard this rumor here first).
